New York City Engagement Shoot, Ali & Justin

What a blast it was for Elizabeth and I to follow Ali and Justin around NYC where they live, play and work. The visual opportunities are endless. We walked 42nd Street, took the New York Subway to Columbus Circle, then explored Central Park. In the evening we took a New York Skyline shot from the rooftop of Ali and Justin’s condo building. After that we went to Times Square, found the ‘LOVE” sculpture by Robert Indiana that was alluded to in the book cover design for Eric Segal’s novel “Love Story, which starred Ali McGraw, who our Ali was named after. Also, their dog, Rocco, a Rhodesian Ridgeback found his way into several pictures. We are looking forward to photographing Ali and Justin’s 2011 wedding on St Lucia Island in the Caribbean. Vice-President Joe Biden Portrait Shoot

Last week I had the honor of photographing Vice-President Joe Biden while he was visiting Colorado. I photographed the Vice-President with several key Colorado Democrats including Congresswoman Betsy Markey. I found him to be a very energetic man, full of life, who found the time to genuinely connect with the people who crossed his path, including myself. I was happy to get a portrait of him that I feels shows a glimpse into his authentic self where he relaxed for me and my camera. Here are a few shots from the shoot including one that he insisted on which includes me along with the Vice President and Congresswoman Markey. My favorite is the last one. In the art of truthfulness of photojournalism all pictures are straight-out-of-camera with no enhancements, Photoshop etc.

DENVER ISES Event at Catering by Design

This past week I photographed a fun event for The International Society of Event Specialists (ISES), Denver Chapter. It was hosted in the industrial space of Catering by Design, one of Denver’s premier catering companies. I’ve been a member of ISES the past four years and have valued the networking and educational benefits of being associated with Denver’s finest event planners, caterers, event venues, other photographers, entertainment companies, decor companies and other vendors involved in the event planning industry. For this particular event, attendees where put into teams who were challenged in a specific area of event planning by having to come up with a creative idea in a specific area like food preparation, table decor, mixology and a DJ song list. A panel of four distinguished judges selected the winners in each category. A fun time was had by all. Here are some of my pictures from the event. Flagstaff Mountain Wedding Engagement Shoot

I recently photographed an engagement session for Deanna and Gavin, who are planning a wedding in Denver next Summer at The Immaculate Conception Cathedral and The Brown Palace. To offset the urban locale of their wedding they wanted to do something in nature for their engagement shoot. We tripped it up to Flagstaff Mountain outside of Boulder and had some fun in the snow as well as hiking around. Here are some of my favorite pics from the shoot.

Bridal Photo Shoot

On Sunday I joined a small group of Colorado’s premeire wedding photographers in Denver to discuss and share evolutionary ideas emerging in the wedding photography and fashion industry involving the use off camera lighting. I employ off camera lighting for my weddings to help make more dramatic images as well as help light dark reception halls and sometimes ceremony venues.

My friend Joe Keum organized the event. After hanging out at Joe’s studio for a couple of hours and discussing various lighting techniques we went outside with two lovely bridal models and experimented with our own personal ideas. I worked with a wonderful model, Avelina, who braved the cold and late day rainy weather to play along with my ideas. A challenge was keeping her borrowed $2900 wedding dress from getting too messed up. Attached are some of my favorite images of the day. Yes, Avelina is the same model in all the pictures. We really got some different looks.

My number one choice for a light source is natural light and my last choice of a light source is light mounted on the camera. In between are options for using artificial light, often controlled by radio transmitters mounted to my camera and radio receivers attached to remote lighting sources. Most of the time I don’t want the light to be an overbearing element in the image. But sometimes…it can contribute to the overall effect. A good example of my using artificial light to dominate the image is the rather stark, gothic looking B&W image of Avelina holding a tumbleweed bouquet, per my request. The harsh light I used to light Avelina I think works well in adding to the starkness of the image I was looking for. This shot was taken late in the day when it was pouring rain and so we retreated to a parking garage to create this image. The tumbleweed was blowing around on the floor of the garage.

Latest Accolade: #3 ranking in the World among Wedding Photojournalists

The International Artistic Guild of Wedding Photojournalists has certainly been kind to me this past year. They just recently ranked me as the #3 wedding photojournalist in the world. A humbling honor since the membership of this organization is truly global and represents many of the most recognized celebrity wedding photographers in the world. I was previously ranked as the #5 wedding photographer in the world. These rankings can be very fleeting, so I’ll enjoy the moment. Here is the highetst ranked image of mine from a recent competion. This picture was taken after the wedding and after the formals. This little girl needed her afternoon nap and I thought she looked like an angel.

Washington DC Engagement Shoot

I had the pleasure of photographing an engagement shoot in Washington DC for Karine and James who will be getting married this summer in Colorado.

We incorporated the US Capitol building into some pictures along with some images in the underground Metro.

It was a fun walk around DC with a great couple. We look forward to their wedding at the new Della Terra Chateau in Estes Park.

Las Vegas WPPI Photography Convention

My wife Elizabeth and I celebrated Valentine’s Day in Las Vegas by attending the week long Wedding & Portrait Photographers International (WPPI) Convention. The Convention was hosted at The MGM Grand Hotel.

A great time to hook up with photography friends from around the world. attend some innovative photography workshops and check out all the latest photography gear at the Convention’s trade show.

Here are some pictures from the week. Our photographer friend Kent Meireis was kind enough to take a picture of us with the Vegas strip in the background. Other pictures here are some random shots by me including John Popper of Blues Traveler , who performed for us at a private party.

WOW! Ranked 5th in the World among Wedding Photojournalists

I just got great news in being named the #5 wedding photojournalist in the world by The International Artistic Guild of Wedding Photojournalists (www.agwpja.com). This was based on my success in scoring two images in recent competition including a 1st Place award in the Ceremony category. Again, this is an organization that photographers cannot just join, but have to be elected into. It’s membership consists of top photographers all over the world. 14 American photographers scored in the Top 30 and I was the only one from Colorado. Here is a screen capture of my 1st place award image.

Tara, John and Vito’s Engagement Shoot, Horsetooth Reservoir

On New Years Day Tara, John and their dog Vito hooked up with me to do an engagement shoot around Horsetooth Reservoir outside Fort Collins. Tara and John, who are organic farmers, live in Northern California on 40 acres and will be coming back to Colorado this summer for an Estes Park wedding. When Tara told me she loved Led Zepplin music I figured I had some options for getting a little extra creative on the shoot.
